Recipe Ingredients

ingredients needed to make ham and potato soup

Butter - You can use salted or unsalted butter with this. Just keep in mind that the salt from the ham and the added salt MAY be too salty for your liking if you use salted butter.

Flour - This helps to add thickness to the soup base.

Milk - I use full-fat milk as it adds richness to the recipe.

Celery - Dice it up into smaller pieces for the soup.

Onion - Try and dice up the onion to be a similar size to the celery and the ham.

Ham - You can buy a cooked ham and chop it up or use leftover ham and add it.

Potatoes - White potatoes work great. Red potatoes are a delicious option, too.

Chicken broth - You can also use Instant Pot Bone Broth or a veggie broth.

Add more veggies - Celery and onions are great, but you can also add carrots, mushrooms, broccoli, or anything else that you're craving.

Recipe Notes

  • If the soup is too thick after it's made, you can always mix in a little bit of milk to help thin it out.

What are good soup toppings?

You can easily use top soup with so many ingredients! Some of the most popular are shredded cheese, croutons, diced onions, cilantro, hot sauce, sour cream, corn chips, and/or bacon bits.

How do you store leftover soup?

The best way to store leftover soup is to let it cool down all the way and then add it to an airtight container. Keep it in the fridge and eat it within 3-4 days.

You can also freeze leftover soup by adding it to a freezer-safe container and eating it within 2-3 months.
