In Greece and Bulgaria, Spanakopita and tyropita are typically not served with anything as a side dish, neither are they served as side dish to a meat/chicken/fish/salad dish. They are eaten often for breakfast or main course for a light lunch or dinner; may be accompanied by plain yogurt or a yogurt drink; they go well with beer or even wine. It is only in the US that I see people pairing (and this ruining) spanakopita and tyropita with other dishes. And yes, I speak with authority as I grew up in Bulgaria and traveled often to see relatives in Greece, where my grandfather is from.
