Can I use red potatoes?

Yes you can! But cooking times may be a little different, so I won't make them in the same batch.

How to serve these yam fries?

These Sweet potato fries work great with ketchup, bbq sauce, tahini and anything you like. For more ideas feel free to check What to Eat With Sweet Potato Fries.

Which spices to use?

I suggest using smoked paprika, rosemary powder, chili powder and cayenne (or any cayenne pepper substitute). This way the yam fries are sweet and spicy at the same time.

But feel free to play with it and add your favorite combination of spices.

How to cut sweet potatoes?

Cut them into fries as I do for the best results. You can also try cubes or slices, but the cooking time my change accordingly.

  1. Turned out pretty good! The key is soaking the cut potatoes for a half hour. I drained the starchy water half way through and poured new water to soak. I also did not salt until the end and I cut them in a shoe string style and they totally got crispy.

    1. Yes for most of my recipes I'm using 6q Instant Pot.
For air fryer recipes like the sweet potato fries, just use as much as you can fit in one layer.

  2. Hi, This is the first time I'm using my insta pot as an air fryer, so it'll be trial and error for me. I sliced my potatoes thin and soaked in cold water for 1/2 hour, but I did salt them before cooking. I cooked them for 18 minutes with a flip in between, but they were still not quite cooked through. Another 6 minutes seemed to be the right amount of time for my air fryer. The potatoes were cooked and the edges were crispy. The spices were excellent. Not to shabby for our first attempt! Thx for the recipe!

  3. Just made these and they were great. I made a few adjustments using instant pot fryer. First, sweet potato fries will never have the same consistency as regular fries. So accept that. Second, I only used one large sweet potato, you can’t overcrowd in air friers or they won’t crisp well. I also cooked them for 3-5 min longer than the recipe and tossed them 3-4 times in between cooking.

    1. No pressure! This is using the air fryer lid. It has a separate plug. You do not even plug in regular instant pot plug!

  4. I tried broiling them, but they still weren't crispy. The spices were excellent, though. Would make this again. Just don't call them "fries."

    1. Pleased to know that you liked the flavoring. If you like crispy fries, then you can deep fry them lightly after removing from the Instant Pot.

    1. For crispy skin: preheat the oven to broiler. Arrange the Instant Pot cooked fries onto a baking sheet, and lightly spray with cooking oil. Broil for about 3-5 minutes.

  5. These were a soggy mess and I did not cook for the full time either. I'm still pretty new to the instant pot but I just knew this wouldn't turn out... What a waste 🙁

    1. You can’t overcrowded them. I only used one large potato. I also cooked them in air fryer for a few min longer tossing them 3-4 times. Also, don’t expect the same consistency as regular fries. They are healthier but will always be a little different than the pure starch potato.
