Ingredients

Eggs - The eggs provide a protein-rich base for the dish. If you're allergic to eggs, you can use avocado or tofu as substitutes, but the flavor will be significantly different.

Mayonnaise - mayonnaise is for creamy texture. If you're watching your calories, try using low-fat yogurt or a vegan mayonnaise instead.

Mustard - mustard gives these deviled eggs a bit of zing. Yellow mustard will work just fine, but Dijon or whole grain mustard could add an extra depth of flavor.

Paprika - paprika lends color and a smoky flavor to the dish. If you don't have paprika on hand, you could use chili powder or a dash of cayenne pepper, but use sparingly to avoid overpowering the dish.

Hot sauce - hot sauce takes these from regular deviled eggs to spicy deviled eggs. If you prefer less spice, you could replace this with Worcestershire sauce or a bit of soy sauce.

Tips

  • To ensure your eggs peel easily, add a teaspoon of baking soda to the boiling water.
  • The fresher the eggs, the harder they are to peel. Try to use eggs that are a few days old.
  • For a smoother filling, consider passing the yolks through a fine-mesh sieve before mixing with the other ingredients.
  • If you're not a fan of spice, you can reduce or omit the hot sauce.
  • If you're making these for a party, you can prepare the eggs and the filling a day ahead and assemble just before serving to keep them fresh.

How to Serve

Deviled eggs make a versatile and delicious appetizer, ideal for parties, picnics, or just as a tasty snack. Their presentation is flexible, which means you can adapt them to the occasion.

  • Party Platter: Arrange the deviled eggs on a large platter with other appetizers like cheese cubes, mini sandwiches, and vegetable sticks. This presents a visually pleasing and varied option for guests.
  • As Part of a Brunch: Serve spicy deviled eggs as part of a brunch spread. Accompany them with waffles, fruit salad, and a pitcher of fresh juice for a balanced meal.
  • Fancy Dinner: Garnish the deviled eggs with smoked salmon, dill, or caviar to elevate them to a high-end appetizer for a fancy dinner.
