Ingredients

Cuban Bread: Cuban bread is a long, baguette-like white bread that has a crisp crust and a soft, light interior. It is a traditional component of a Cuban sandwich. If you can't find Cuban bread, a good substitute would be French or Italian bread.

Roast Pork: This is typically a slow-roasted marinated pork that's tender and full of flavor. The pork is an essential component of the sandwich, providing a substantial and savory element. If you don't have roast pork, you can use sliced ham alone, but the sandwich will lose some of its depth of flavor.

Ham: This provides a salty, smoky counterpoint to the roast pork. It's often a cured, cooked ham that is thinly sliced. If you're looking for a substitute, turkey can work, but it will change the flavor profile of the sandwich.

Swiss Cheese: This cheese melts well and has a mild, nutty flavor that complements the other ingredients. Provolone can be used as a substitute if Swiss cheese is not available.

Pickles and Mustard: These provide the tangy, acidic component to balance the richness of the meats and cheese. Dill pickles are traditional, and yellow mustard is typically used. If you need to substitute, you could use a different type of pickle or even coleslaw for crunch and acidity, and any type of mustard you prefer.

Tips

  • Press the sandwich while cooking. This helps the ingredients meld together and gives the bread a nice, toasty crust.
  • If you don't have a sandwich press, you can use a heavy skillet or a brick wrapped in aluminum foil to press the sandwich.
  • Make sure to layer your ingredients evenly. This ensures that you get a bit of everything in each bite.
  • Use good quality ingredients. This sandwich is simple, so the flavors of each ingredient really shine through.
  • You can prepare the pork ahead of time, making this a great option for a quick and easy meal.

How to Serve

A Cuban sandwich is traditionally a lunch item, served warm and pressed so that the Swiss cheese is melted and the bread is crispy. The pickles and mustard give it a tangy punch that pairs perfectly with the savory meats.

  • For a complete meal, pair the sandwich with a side of plantain chips or French fries.
  • You can also serve it with a traditional Cuban black bean soup for a hearty, satisfying lunch or dinner.
  • If you're looking for a lighter option, a simple salad with a citrus vinaigrette would be a perfect accompaniment. A cold mojito or a classic Cuban coffee could also be a great beverage to pair with this sandwich.

The Cubano is much better if you temper the sharpness of the mustard by stirring in a bit of mayo (NOT salad dressing.)
