10 Things You Should Never Do When Traveling Abroad

There are endless possibilities travelers encounter when it comes to going abroad. Every new country brings in a new culture, new experiences, and new people to mingle with. However, there are some things that you should absolutely avoid to be respectful of where you're visiting, as well as to maintain your personal safety.

1. Don't Talk About How Your Country Is Better

In my opinion, this is the most disrespectful thing one can do when they travel to a new destination. The answer would be bad-mouthing the place and calling your hometown better. Countries around the globe have different infrastructures, habits, ideologies, and cultures, but just because you're not used to them doesn't mean your place of residence is better.

2. Don't Get Out of the Vehicle on a Safari

It's strange that this must be explicitly said because several people have reported how tourists want to see the animals up close, so they leave their cars. Getting the perfect Instagram shot can be tempting when you're on a safari in a country with exotic animals. But is it really worth risking your life? I don't think so.

3. Don't Vandalize

You shouldn't be vandalizing public property anywhere and especially not in a foreign land. Not only is this a blatant disregard for the locals and their history, but it also ruins the reputation of your country's people. Observe, take pictures, and learn more about them, but don't try to destroy things for no reason.

4. Don't Be Afraid of Trying To Speak Their Language

When you venture into the unknown with little knowledge of the local language, you may feel you should avoid trying to speak that language so you won't be embarrassed. The truth is that natives appreciate your attempt at learning something they grew up with. They'll be delighted and might even help you polish those skills.

5. Don't Walk on the Bike Lanes

Bicycles are a standard mode of transportation in European countries. When walking on the bike lanes, you're basically walking on the road and obstructing the pathway for travelers to pass. Be careful because you may affect not only your life but also the lives of others commuting.

6. Ask Before Taking Selfies in Cultural Places

When you're in a new territory, you need to find out which places have historical significance to the locals of the nation. Some sites are off-limits for selfies and pictures because they hold deep meaning, and you might end up offending everyone there. The solution to this is to ask for permission to photograph or record.

7. Don't Litter

Just throw waste inside the dustbins; it's not that hard. Littering ruins beautiful places by stripping that beauty away. It also causes land pollution and unsanitary conditions. Treat foreign land as your own and avoid causing harm to it.

8. Don't Take Poverty Tours

If you're visiting an underdeveloped country, you should explore all aspects of it, the good and the bad. However, this does not give you the right to take pictures and videos showing struggling citizens. Don't invade their privacy or intrude on them about their lives just to make yourself feel better.

9. Don't Wear Shoes in Asian Homes

A big part of Asian culture is to leave shoes outside the home. Many places have carpets to prevent your feet from getting dirty, and taking them off before you go in the house is a sign of respect. Small acts of respecting other cultures will take you a long way and will help you grow and learn more about them.

10. Try To Blend in With the Locals

You should avoid sticking out to avoid getting targeted by scammers who're ready to take your money because you're not from around here. This can serve a dual purpose as you can explore local culture and keep yourself safe.
