When it comes to cooking, figuring out what's true and what's not can be tricky, especially if you're not a chef. To help combat disinformation regarding food, we've compiled a list of tips and tricks every home cook should know. Read on to learn the truth about these 10 popular cooking myths!

1. MSG Is Unhealthy

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) got a bad rap for years as being unhealthy. Times have changed, as one poster said, "MSG is amazing, and it was proven anti-Asian racism fueled the whole controversy around it."

2. Blooming Yeast Is Necessary

Yeast can be a tricky part of baking. It's active and, per instructions, should be added to warm water and sugar to help it 'bloom.' For one home cook, blooming yeast is just a formality. "That you have to bloom your yeast. You only bloom the yeast to ensure it is still alive/active. Instead, you can check the expiration date."

3. Fat Is Bad

For the longest time, companies have perpetuated the myth that fat is bad for you. However, research shows that full-fat diets may be healthier than their low-fat counterparts, one person says. "Full fat does not equal bad. Many studies show that people who eat full-fat dairy products consume less overall and have healthier diets."

4. Beer Can Chicken

Many people like roasting their chicken with an open beer can inside. For one individual, however, the idea is ridiculous. "Beer Can Chicken. It's just roast chicken. The beer does nothing."

5. Marinating Makes Food Taste Better

Marinades are said to add flavor to meat when used correctly. However, at least one participant isn't that impressed. "Marination. Marinades do not penetrate meats deeply; they're primarily a surface treatment."

6. Using Oil and Butter

Here's a newsflash from one commenter about oil and butter, "A splash of Oil will keep your butter from burning."

7. Use Potatoes To Fix a Salty Soup

If you've been cooking for a while, there's a good chance you've oversalted a dish. I made my Thanksgiving turkey gravy much too salty, and my husband had to fix it. He didn't, however, use potatoes to help it out.

As one contributor mentioned, "Adding potatoes to your salty soup won't reduce the saltiness." You're much better off diluting the broth and adding a bouillon cube to regain any lost flavor.

8. Crockpots Are Bad

A lot of people think slow cookers or crock pots are bad. For busy parents, though, they can be a lifesaver.

As someone pointed out, " I think slow cookers have their place. It's a straightforward way to make a bunch of food in a countertop device, and so long as you pick soup/stew style recipes suited to it, it'll do the job just fine."

9. Adding Oil to Pasta Keeps It From Sticking Together

One respondent thinks that adding oil to your pasta water should be illegal. "Adding oil to your pasta water will prevent your pasta from sticking. Ridiculous. The oil sits on top of the water the whole time—the only thing you're doing, other than wasting oil, is allowing oil to potentially adhere to your pasta when you remove it from the pot. That may cause your sauce to have problems sticking to your pasta."

10. Cooking Time on Stove vs in the Oven

Several users argued over which takes longer, the stove or the oven. One said, "At the right temperature, the oven is the same amount of time but healthier and tastes better." Another replied, "Sure, but ovens take 15-20 minutes to reach temperature."
