12 Things Old People Wish We Still Had

old people

Many older folks reminisce about the past, often wishing for the return of things that modern life has phased out. From the simplicity of handwritten letters to the communal joy of drive-in movies, these are the items and experiences that hold a special place in their hearts. Here’s a look at twelve things older generations often miss and wish were still a part of today’s world, highlighting the charm and nostalgia of bygone days.

1. Scent-sational Memories

Ah, the power of smell to take you back in time. Who could forget the distinct aroma of Babysoft, Windsong, or Charlie cologne? Then there was the sweetness of strawberry lip gloss that marked many a teenage kiss. Don't forget the unique scents of Tab and Fresca soft drinks, often enjoyed during a lazy summer afternoon. And, of course, the earthy fragrance of patchouli oil, a staple in many bohemian homes. Each scent has a story and a place in the hearts of those who remember.

2. Bands on a Budget

A $500 ticket to see your favorite band performing? Gone are the affordable days when attending concerts didn't cost an arm and a leg. A member mentions attending Jane's Addiction show in 1989 for only $8! Now who's "Been Caught Stealing?"

3. Change Is The Only Constant

Many members share that they miss life without hyper-ness: hyper fears, hyper rate of change, hyper accessibility, and hyper parenting. Sure, technology has brought forth many wonders, but it has taken away tranquility and the essence of living in the moment.

4. Vinyl Voyages

One user shares the memorable times he used to drive to a record store with a list of records to buy and a heart full of excitement. These stores carried a deep catalog of just about everything. With the staff knowing more about music than anyone and rare music playing in the background that one would have never heard on the radio, every visit was like an adventure.

5. Arcade Memories: A Pixelated Past

Ah - the sweet sound of quarters jingling as you walked into a video game arcade! For many older folks, this was the perfect hangout destination with their friends. From Pac-Man to Asteroids, these arcades had something for everyone. But, of course, today's vividly visual computer games can never match the simple retro experience!

6. Music-Television Nostalgia

MTV revolutionized music and pop culture in the 1980s, becoming an iconic platform for music videos, breaking new artists, and defining what was cool. While its focus has shifted over the years, the nostalgia for MTV's heyday, when it was all about the music, remains strong. It reminds us of a time when music television was a communal experience that shaped the musical tastes of generations.

7. Grown Up Too Fast

Many members articulate missing the childhoods of their children. Nothing feels the same as having babies in their lap with their sweet and light voices before they learned about the world's harsh realities.

8. Stars Under the Stars

Drive-in movies were a cornerstone of American entertainment. Imagine pulling up in your car, cozying up with some popcorn and watching the latest flicks under the night sky. Whether it was a date night or a fun outing with friends, drive-ins offered a unique way to enjoy a movie. The joy of adjusting the metal speaker on the car window, the anticipation during intermission, and the comfort of watching in pajamas—these are experiences many older folks deeply miss.

9. Lost Art of Durable Appliances

An individual shares they miss good quality, long-lasting appliances. Sure, the countless features of today are unparalleled to any in the past, but the quality and longevity of products have fallen over time. Instead, we're left with a culture where everything is meant to be disposed of when the next model or trend comes along. Unsustainable for the planet and wallet alike!

10. Kids Gone Wild

One person shared that their parents would lock them out of their house in the morning, and they would explore the forest and cycle with their friends until it was time to get back. Nowadays, children go from one planned activity to the next without freedom.

11. The Queen of Rock

There's just something about the old great rock bands that bring a twinkle to the eye of those who remember them. Whether it's The Rolling Stones or Queen, these bands had a unique charisma and energy that is irreplaceable.

A life full of engaging conversations where everyone isn't tethered to a device seems like a distant dream in today's world. Ironically, the internet was created to unite us, yet it's driving us further apart.

This thread inspired the post.

  1. You are absolutely right 🙂 Wouldn't that be great? I just can't believe what kind of life people think you have to enjoy these days 🙁

  2. Ditto to what Putintane said but what about depending on someone's word or their work ethic? What ever happened to the U.S being governed by honest people? And where did the Christian principles we used to live by go?Our country used to be blessed by God but not anymore and that's SO sad.

  3. Being able to walk alone to get from one place to another. Now a days, it is almost unheard of, because of the high crime rates everywhere.

  4. Writing letters.
Sitting on the beach off season and listening to the sounds.
Made up games with the kids (scavenger hunts, I Spy with my Little
    eye, Alphabet License Plates etc.)

  5. Other Things Old People Wish We Still Had:
    1) Common sense
    2) Using proper pronouns, like he/him, she/her; not that other stuff that's being flung around today
    3) Using proper English
    4) Courtesy
    5) Republicans with real backbones

    1. An excellent list.
Maybe, just maybe, if parents used corporal punish a little more often, and cared what their kids did, perhaps we would have fewer little s**ts tearing up things and people.

    2. Love it! Your so right!
People seem so confused today, I think that's what this generation should be called, The Confused and Lost Generation since none of them seem to know what they want to be called or clear on many a subjects in life. Serious mentally lost, lost to political control and emotionally lost. Seriously, I see younger teenagers, walking around acting like they have no idea where there going, like seeing some walk inside stores is like watching a lost pet wondering around. The other day, my husband almost ran a teenage girl over because she was in the middle of the street, on her phone, walking slowly, in dark black clothes in a not well lit street but he saw her just in time to not hit her.
It just so, so, so, so sad to see this generation grow up.
