Jamaican Beef Patties are a tasty snack loved by many. They are like small meat pies filled with beef and spices, all wrapped up in a golden-yellow crust. People in Jamaica and all around the world enjoy these patties. They're perfect for lunch, a quick snack, or even dinner.

You can find them in restaurants, but making them at home is special. You control the flavors and know exactly what's in them. Plus, it's fun to make them with family and friends. Ready to cook some delicious patties? Let's get started!

Why This Recipe Works

First off, this recipe is simple but packed with flavors that make your taste buds dance. We use a mix of spices like curry powder, thyme, and Scotch bonnet pepper to give the beef filling that authentic Jamaican taste. The spices blend well with the beef, creating a mouth-watering filling that's hard to resist. If you've never tried a Jamaican beef patty before, you're in for a treat that's both savory and a bit spicy.

Another great thing about this recipe is that it's flexible. If you don't have all the spices, you can make do with what you have. The crust is also easy to make, and it turns out flaky and delicious every time. This homemade version allows you to adjust the spice level or even add some extra ingredients like cheese or vegetables. So not only do you get to enjoy a tasty meal, but you also get the satisfaction of making it just the way you like it.

Ingredients

Ground Beef- This is the main filling. You can also use ground chicken or turkey if you prefer.

Pastry Dough-You'll need enough for about 10 patties. Pre-made dough is okay, but homemade is better. Pie crust dough can work in a pinch.

Scotch Bonnet Pepper- This gives the patty its heat. If it's too spicy, you can use jalapeno.

Onion- This adds flavor to the meat. If you don't have it, onion powder can work.

Spices- A mix of curry powder, garlic powder, and paprika. These add the signature taste. You can adjust these to your liking.

Tips

  • For even more flavor, marinate the beef overnight.
  • Make sure to finely chop the Scotch bonnet pepper and onion so that they mix well into the beef.
  • If using pre-made dough, let it thaw to room temperature before rolling it out.
  • When sealing the patties, use a fork to crimp the edges for a traditional look.
  • Be cautious when handling Scotch bonnet peppers. They are very spicy. Use gloves or wash your hands well after.

How to Serve

Jamaican Beef Patties are often enjoyed on their own as a quick snack or meal. They're great for on-the-go eating, as they're easy to hold and not too messy.

  • Serve them with a side of coleslaw or a light salad for a balanced meal.
  • Incorporate them into a "Jamaican Night" with other dishes like jerk chicken and rice and peas.
  • For a more casual take, make "Patty Sliders" by placing a smaller patty between mini buns, and adding lettuce and sauce.
