Instant Pot Ultra vs Instant Pot DUO Plus

Today we have a great comparison that will be comparing two cookers from the same company.

We will be comparing the Instant Pot DUO Plus and the Instant Pot Ultra. I think this comparison will be particularly interesting in that the designs of these two cookers are remarkably similar.

For starters you can see my full Instant Pot Ultra review here or my DUO Plus60 Review here.

This article will cover the most important differences between these two cookers as well as some pros and cons of each.

If you’re like me you want to get the best value out of your hard-earned money. So hopefully after reading this, you will put more thought into what you might want out of an appliance as well as what is and isn’t worth spending money on.

So let’s take a look at the differences between these two cookers.

The Most Important Differences Between The Instant Pot Plus & The Instant Pot Ultra

Really, for most people, if you’re looking for something that feels a bit more advanced, the Instant Pot Ultra is a great choice because of its sleek interface and large LED display.

The Instant Pot Plus is also a great choice because, although the Ultra has a bigger screen, the Instant Pot Plus has a few extra functions added into its interface.

It costs more money and is only available for sale on Sur La Table for the moment but it does everything you could ask for and has a really easy to use interface.

As for the differences between the Ultra60 and the Plus60, I’ll list the more obvious differences below.

  1. The Instant Pot Ultra’s interface (control panel) feels and looks much more modern.
  2. The Instant Pot Plus is the heir to the Instant Pot DUO line, and thus will be familiar to any users of those cookers.
  3. The Ultra can cook in sous-vide mode while the Plus cannot.
  4. The Ultra can adjust it’s pressure settings to your altitude making pressure cooking at high altitudes a little safer and efficient.
  5. The Instant Pot Plus is considerably cheaper in price than the Ultra making it a good choice for the average home cook.

The DUO Plus can be purched on Amazon for now. It’s slightly mroe expensive than the regular DUO cooker and a lot less than the Smart or Ultra.

As you can see there aren’t too many huge differences in these cookers. You have to really get into each cooker to be able to tell a difference.

So let’s look at each cooker individually, starting with the Instant Pot Ultra.

The Instant Pot Ultra, The Newest Product From Instant Pot

The Instant Pot Ultra is the newest product from Instant Pot and just came out at the beginning of April 2017. If you are looking for something new and sleek to use this cooker is definitely going to be worth a look. It offers many functions that Instant Pot is well known for.

As well as that, it also has a much larger interface including a fancy dial selector and everything is very quick and intuitive to use.

This cooker only has one model that has been verified thus far, that is the IP-Ultra60 a 6-quart cooker. So far we don’t know if or when an Ultra50 or Ultra80 will be released although personally I’d love to have an 8-quart Instant Pot Ultra!

This cooker is more versatile than any Instant Pot cooker before it, making it a plus to choose for anyone looking to stay in the Instant Pot product lines.

A new feature on the IP-Ultra interface is labled Ultra. Although you may think this is a new feature that has been introduced with the pot it is actually just the new name for manual mode. For this model you have “ultra” control over your cooking. 🙂

Let me list the pros and cons;

  • This cooker is more versatile than any cooker before it from Instant Pot.
  • The new interface is much easier to use.
  • Many new exciting features exclusive to Instant Pot Cookers.
  • The Temperature and pressure controls are easier to use than ever. Temperature control is entirely your choice, while the Pressure option has a none, low, and high option.
  • A new Process indicator which monitors how close your food is to being done.
  • You can cook sous-vide in this multi-cooker.
  • Your pressure cooker can now adjust to your altitude, a feature not found anywhere else.

As with all cookers, it has a few drawbacks.

  • This cooker is pretty heavily priced which is a turn-off for many people on a tighter budget.
  • This cooker while versatile lacks some of the manual versatility of similar cookers in the market like the Breville Fast Slow Pro.
  • This cooker is also devoid of any special features that many cookers have like Flavor Infusion Technology we find in cookers like the Power Pressure Cooker XL.

So this cooker all in all, while being a very nice one overall, lacks anything that makes it special like the Power Pressure Cookers and the Fast Slow Pro have.

Overall though, if you are looking to stay in the Instant Pot products and are looking for something more flashy, this cooker certainly does the trick.

So now with all that being said, let’s look at the Instant Pot Plus and what is has to offer.

The Instant Pot DUO Plus, An Improved Classic

Instant Pot IP-DUO Plus60The Instant Pot DUO Plus is an upgrade on the ‘classic’ DUO cookers. It has several added features that the DUO cookers lacked while still keeping the Instant Pot DUO feel to it.

The Instant Pot DUO Plus boasts a larger screen which makes everything a bit easier to read. One drawback of the original DUO that will be a true game changer is you no longer have to press the cancel button to change the time. The timer has its own independent buttons now!

A completely new function added is the sterilize feature which can sterilize bottles and equipment or even pasteurize milk.

Having this cooker on the market, if it is priced well, will more likely than not phase out the original DUO.

One thing that always took time to get used to was the  DUO’s manual interface. This cookers interface is much simpler to use and will make cooking a breeze for everyone.

And, of course, this cooker still has the yogurt cooking function for all the yogurt lovers out there.

We do know how much this cooker costs and although it is more expensive than the regular DUO model it isn’t a whole lot more. It is well priced in the premium zone but much cheaper than other options like the Ultra, Smart, Fast Slow Pro, or even the yet to be released Fagor LUX 360.

This new cooker without a doubt is a massive upgrade and step forward for the Instant Pot DUO line and the Instant Pot company as a whole.

Now that we have looked at both of these cookers, which is the best value?

Which Should You Purchase?

Based on current pricing the Instant Pot Plus 60 is an upgraded version of its predecessor and it costs only a little bit more. To get the fancy interface, altitude adjustment, and sous-vide program you have to pay a good chunk more so I think the Plus is a great value…

However, the Instant Pot Ultra is looking quite promising with its new high-end features.

Overall, with the knowledge that the DUO Plus is lower priced, for most consumers I would say go for the Plus, or maybe wait a while after the Ultra releases to see if the price drops some.

Both cookers definitely seem to be worth getting though, and with the Ultra being on the cutting edge end of modern cooking, things for Instant Pot, as well as the industry, are looking exciting.
