Cauliflower Parmesan

Imagine a crisp, golden, and savory treat that is healthy, easy to make, and wonderfully comforting. Cauliflower Parmesan is an inspired twist on the classic Italian dish, Eggplant Parmesan. Instead of eggplant, we're using nutrient-rich cauliflower, giving the dish a unique, slightly sweet, and pleasantly earthy flavor.

By employing the same tantalizing mix of gooey melted cheese, hearty tomato sauce, and a crunchy breadcrumb coating, this dish delivers an irresistible combination that will have everyone at your table reaching for seconds. It's a brilliant way to introduce more vegetables into your diet in a delightfully delicious way.

It's a simple recipe that shines by allowing each ingredient to showcase its distinct qualities.

What makes this recipe even more appealing is its versatility and ease of preparation. You can prepare it for a weekday dinner or serve it at a gathering. The fact that it can be made ahead and reheated just before serving makes it ideal for entertaining. And, it's vegetarian-friendly, making it an excellent option for those aiming to reduce their meat consumption without sacrificing flavor or satisfaction. Lastly, it’s a fun way to change up the routine and experiment with new twists on classic dishes. Try this Cauliflower Parmesan, and it might just become your new favorite!

Ingredients

Cauliflower: A versatile, low-carb substitute for traditional ingredients in many recipes, cauliflower is the star of this dish. Choose a large, firm head with tight clusters. Alternatively, you could use broccoli if preferred.

All-purpose flour: Used for battering the cauliflower before baking. You can substitute with gluten-free flour or almond flour for a gluten-free version.

Eggs: They help the flour and breadcrumbs stick to the cauliflower. If you're vegan or allergic to eggs, a mixture of ground flaxseed and water can be used as a substitute.

Breadcrumbs: Give the cauliflower a crispy coating. Panko breadcrumbs can be used for extra crunch, or gluten-free breadcrumbs for a gluten-free option.

Parmesan cheese: Adds a rich and tangy flavor to the dish. If you're vegan, use nutritional yeast or vegan parmesan cheese instead.

Tips

  • When cutting the cauliflower, try to make the florets a uniform size for even cooking.
  • To prevent the cauliflower from becoming soggy, don't overcrowd the baking tray.
  • For a more golden and crispy result, consider flipping the cauliflower pieces halfway through baking.
  • When adding the tomato sauce and cheese, don't overload each piece. Too much can make them soggy.
  • Let the dish rest for a few minutes after baking before serving to allow the cheese to set a bit.

How to Serve

Cauliflower parmesan can be served as a main dish or a side dish, depending on the other elements of the meal. It pairs well with a variety of foods due to its savory, tangy flavors and crunchy texture.

  • As a main dish: Serve it alongside a crisp green salad and a hearty whole grain like quinoa or brown rice for a balanced vegetarian meal.
  • In a sandwich: Place a few pieces of the cauliflower parmesan between slices of crusty bread for a unique and tasty sandwich.
  • As a side dish: It complements grilled or roasted meats well, making it a great side for a barbecue or a holiday meal.
