While hot sauce can be a game-changer for many dishes, adding that perfect kick of heat and flavor, it's not always the right match. Believe it or not, some foods just don't jive well with the fiery condiment. It's either because the hot sauce overpowers the food's delicate flavors, or the combination creates a taste that's, well, off.

1. Cereal
Cereal alone may not be the worst thing, but once the milk is added, hot sauce should be removed from the plate. Milk is not meant to have any spices (unless you count chocolate or strawberry syrup), so you should avoid adding any to save your tastebuds and your stomach.
2. Pancakes
A sweet breakfast item, hot sauce should stay far away from this food. While hot sauce may be added to other breakfast items, such as eggs or hash browns, pancakes deserve to be eaten with fruit, syrup, or jelly.
3. Muffins
While muffins may come in many shapes and sizes, a spicy sauce on top of one would not go well. Muffins are best to be eaten with no sauce, but if you add some, hot sauce should be the last on the list. Most muffin toppings are sweet or fruit-like, which would not mix well with a kick of spice.
4. Meringue
Another sweet desert-like food that should not be mixed with a hot sauce, meringues should avoid spice and stick to things a little sweeter. While adventurous foodies may disagree, hot sauce would not mix well with egg whites and sugar.
5. Cookies
With a large variety of cookies in all shapes and sizes, the last thing the cookie world needs is one with hot sauce. These sweet treats have many toppings and added ingredients, but hot sauce should be omitted from the recipe.
6. Soup
While many people are brave enough to say that adding hot sauce to soup gives it a lot of flavor, others disagree. One popular food forum participant states, "Hot sauce goes well with just about anything that isn't soup." Depending on the soup, we tend to agree.
7. Coffee
It is a drink everyone loves, but hot sauce should stay far away from it. Some people get creative with their coffee, but hot sauce shouldn't be one you add. Coffee should either have a sweet taste or a bitter taste, with no spices involved, the exception being pumpkin spice.
8. Trout
We're not saying that fish is not good with hot sauce — because it is — but it may overpower the flavor here. Since trout is not that flavorful, a hot sauce will take over the taste. Since fish have a more assertive flavor, save the spice for them.
9. Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich
A classic meal from everyone's childhood, you can add many things to make this better. While you can do a lot with this simple sandwich, hot sauce is one to steer clear of. If you want to go bananas, give that a try instead.
10. Ice Cream
With a sweet and savory cold delicious ice cream, hot sauce does go with this. Even though ice cream has many flavors, hot sauce should not go with a cold and sweet item, even though it may seem like it would balance itself out.
