10 Famous Foods That Don't Deserve the Fame

Ready for some culinary controversy? Here are 10 famous foods that might not deserve their superstar status. From overhyped dishes to lackluster cuisines, we're exposing the less-than-stellar truth. Grab a snack, settle in, and prepare to question everything you thought you knew about these popular favorites! AUTHOR: Marianne Paluso.

1. Elaborate Milkshakes

Milkshakes are delicious. And the ones that are elaborate with pieces of cake and other crazy toppings are fun and tasty too. But at the same time, are all those extras worth it? Or are they just needlessly excessive? One disappointed person laments, "It was fun to get," but you could easily get a plain milkshake and sheet cake much cheaper.

2. Gold-Flaked Cuisine

Food topped with gold flakes is one of the most ridiculous creations ever. One user points out, "It doesn't even taste of anything, so it's only there to make the meal more expensive." Another adds that restaurants mark up these dishes immensely. It looks pretty, but they are simply obnoxious dishes to show how much money you have.

3. Deconstructed Food

Deconstructed food is when you break up a meal's ingredients on the plate. But it often costs more. One individual claims, "Deconstructed desserts are the worst. [It] never tastes as good as the real thing, [and] costs three times as much."

Why would I want something I have to construct myself or that won't taste as good for a so-called "fancy" presentation? It's pretentiousness at its finest.

4. Lobster

No one who eats lobster would deny that they love it. But is it worth the price? That is why many find it overrated. Not every lobster meal is created equal, as well.

Sometimes it's delicious; other times, it's less. But the price remains the same. One person mentions cheaper lobster options that could taste even better: "The lobster rolls I had in Maine were much better than lobster [by itself]."

5. Sushi

I am not a fan of sushi. It can be costly, and I don't care for the ingredients. But even those who enjoy it still believe it's overrated and overpriced.

A sushi lover surprisingly complains, "Sushi is stupidly expensive for what it is. You're paying 20% for ingredients and 80% for presentation. If they just put the same ingredients on top of a pile of rice, it would taste exactly the same, [and cost less]."

6. Caviar

I have never understood the appeal of caviar, which is otherwise known as fish eggs. Eating these is a status symbol for many. It's a small portion and extremely pricey. But if you don't care about such things, do yourself a favor and save your money for something better than this itty bitty, overly salty food.

7. Oysters

Oysters are another type of seafood that many find to be a delicacy, while others find it overrated or disgusting. Oysters are known for putting people in a romantic mood. But isn't there an easier way than eating these bottom-dwellers?

8. "Gourmet" Hamburgers

Putting the word "gourmet" in the name of a dish does not automatically elevate it. In the case of gourmet hamburgers, these additional toppings that make it such are often unnecessary and unappealing.

Adding eggs, peanut butter, or truffle aioli may appeal to some, but many find this overrated. Please give me a simple hamburger any day. My idea of gourmet is adding bacon, which does not qualify.

9. Fried Foods

Yes, fried foods can be delicious. But numerous contributors describe how these dishes are often not worth the hype. These foods can be very greasy and heavy, not to mention bad for your diet. Now and then, I indulge, but I agree that they can be over-hyped.

10. Avocado Toast

Avocado toast is the breakfast of millennials. And I do enjoy this dish occasionally. But I agree that it can be over-the-top, overrated, and not worth what restaurants charge. I prefer a simple avocado toast at home. It's easy to prepare and much cheaper. There's nothing overrated about saving money.

  1. Your probably used to eating previously frozen lobster tails which are usually tough and lack flavor. They are nothing like a whole lobster that was cooked live right before your served. As far as oysters go try them char broiled on a hot charcoal grill and splashed with garlic butter.

  2. I disagree with all of these. These foods do deserve their fame. Especially lobster! TF!

  3. I love lobster, so yes it is expensive and it was affordable before dickhead joe biden screwed everything up; Oysters too.
