1. Don’t Fix Your Own Microwave
Times are tough, so if your microwave breaks, you may be tempted to fix it yourself. However, hundreds of people agreed in the comments that you should not repair your microwave due to the currents they can hold even while they are unplugged.
2. Be Careful if You Smell Fish or Gas
There’s a likely chance you could have an electrical fire in your home if there is a strong odor of fish, assuming there’s no other reason, like freshly cooked salmon. Likewise, if you smell gas throughout your home, especially in the kitchen, it could be a sign of a gas leak. Please be careful and take precautions!
3. Impaled? Don’t Pull Out the Item
Leave the item in place if you ever have an accident involving impalement. If you remove it without a medical professional, it could lead to more blood loss. Wait until you have the proper care and equipment to remove the item. “Your odds of survival are much higher if you just leave it be,” noted one.
4. Make Sure People Know You’re Choking
Knowing what to do now can be challenging, but you must make it clear that you are choking if you are not alone. Someone stressed, “If you’re choking, don’t get embarrassed, don’t go to the bathroom, or walk away from people.
I’ve seen a couple nearly die because they panicked and walked away from the dinner table(s) while choking. Do the universal sign for choking with both your hands on your neck, and most people will get the message.”
5. Don’t Put Water on a Flaming Pan
If you have a fire in the kitchen, especially on the stove, don’t throw liquid on it. Throw a lid over the pan to smother it and take it off the heat. Ensure you turn off the stove; many people panic when they see fire and leave it on.
6. Crashed Into an Electrical Pole? Stay Inside
If you crash into an electrical pole while driving, one user advises, “Immediately call 911 (or your country’s equivalent) and stay in the car. You could have downed an electrical wire, and the wire will still be live. Assume the entire area around your vehicle is electrified.
Only get out of the car if there’s an immediate danger, such as a fire. When you exit the vehicle, make sure both feet touch the ground simultaneously, and only take small, shuffling steps and ensure both feet are touching the ground at all times.”
7. Get the Rabies Vaccine if a Rabid Animal Bites You
Rabies is “One of the most lethal diseases on the planet. It has a near 100% fatality once the disease takes hold (and it’s a horrible way to go.),” according to one user. If you have been bit or scratched by a wild animal, you must get the vaccine immediately.
8. Delegate During Emergencies
It’s common to freeze up or be unsure of what to do during an emergency. For example, you might panic if you witness a car accident where you get out of the car to check on the driver. Instead, try to delegate, such as suggesting that other bystanders who have stopped help with calling 911, performing CPR, etc.
9. Know How To Administer Naloxone and Be Honest
If someone you’re with or care for ODS, you must administer naloxone as quickly as possible. Once they are at the hospital or receiving medical care, do not worry about whether the person will get in trouble. You must be honest about what drugs the person has taken if you know, as their life may be at stake. Someone added, “Don’t lie to those of us who work in the ER. We aren’t the cops.”
10. Check for Glowing Eyes on the Dark Highways
If you’re driving down a dark highway, especially at high speeds, you must be very careful of deer, moose, and moose hiding nearby. According to one user, this is the best way to “Avoid or prepare yourselves for collisions.”
