Notes
Some people try using canned black beans for this recipe. I don't recommend it. They are often saltier and can become mushy when cooked.
Be sure to clean the peas really well before using them. There is often some dirt or debris in the bag, so pay attention and just wash and clean them.
The easiest way to test the doneness of the beans is to stick a fork into one and check if they're fork tender. You can also bite into one and make sure that they're easy to chew.
You can add diced onions, diced peppers, and even some canned tomatoes to kick up the flavor and change it up.
Adding onion powder would be a great option to put into this dish. You can also add cayenne pepper and make them spicy as well!
