The bread absorbs the egg mixture for a soft, custardy texture, while sausage adds savory richness and cheese brings melty goodness in every bite. It bakes into a satisfying dish that feels comforting and special with very little effort.

It is also a great recipe because it is perfect for making ahead and feeding a group. You can prepare it the night before, customize it with vegetables or different cheeses, and bake it when needed. It works for breakfast, brunch, or even breakfast-for-dinner, making it a reliable recipe that is easy, versatile, and always crowd-pleasing.

Ingredients

Breakfast sausage: Adds savory, seasoned flavor and makes the dish hearty. Substitute: turkey sausage or plant-based sausage.

Bread: Cubed bread soaks up the egg mixture and creates the casserole base. Substitute: French bread, sourdough, or day-old sandwich bread.

Eggs: Hold everything together and give the strata its fluffy texture.

Cheddar cheese: Adds rich, melty flavor. Substitute: Monterey Jack, Swiss, or mozzarella.

Milk: Combines with eggs to make a creamy custard. Substitute: half-and-half for richer texture.

Tips

  • Use slightly stale bread so it soaks up the custard better.
  • Let the strata rest before baking for the best texture.
  • Brown the sausage well for extra flavor.
  • Cover with foil if the top browns too quickly while baking.
  • Make it the night before for an easy breakfast casserole.
