In early 2017 Instant Pot is releasing the new and improved IP-DUO Plus. It’s an upgrade to the popular DUO line of electric pressure cookers and increases the model from a 7-in-1 multi-cooker to a 9-in-1.
As of early March 2017 the new model isn’t available for sale quite yet but we already know a lot about it so what is the differences between the IP-DUO60 and the IP-DUO Plus60 anyway? UPDATE – As of mid-April 2017 the model was released and it’s priced only slightly higher than the older DUO model making it a well priced product upgrade.
What’s New With the Instant Pot IP-DUO Plus?
First of all all IP-DUO pressure cookers come in 5-quart, 6-quart, and 8-quart sizes but for the time being the DUO Plus will only be available in the the 6-quart size.
The most obvious change from the rest of the DUO pressure cookers will be the display panel. The control panel will be larger and will be a bit easier to use. There are of course new buttons for the preset cooking functions and sterilization mode and the screen itself will be larger, easier to read, and will include a few new icons to make it easier to see at a glance more information about the current cooking mode or cycle. It will look a lot like the IP-Smart screen.
The three new programmed cooking functions added will be the cake, egg, and sterilization functions. The cake and egg functions were recently added to the less expensive IP-LUX V3 model earlier this year so the added sterilization function continues to expand the versatility of the DUO models over the LUX.
Curious how the sterilization mode works on the IP-DUO Plus 60? I sure was.
I haven’t used the function yet but from what I can tell in pre-released information from Instant Pot the preset is more of a function rather than a cooking mode. You use it primarily to disinfect your utensils or possibly pasteurize milk.
Instant Pot states you can use it certain types of canning but as we all know low acid pressure canning should only be done in larger stovetop pots for safety reasons. This canning reference probably has to do with water bath canning or sterilization of canning accessories.
Other features of the DUO Plus which are different from the regular DUO models is that they now give you the opportunity to change the cooking mid-cycle. For instance you can switch from high to low pressure mid-cycle or even change cooking modes altogether in the middle of the cooking process.
In Another Twist – In the excitement of reviewing a new Instant Pot a few people out there have failed to realize that Instant Pot is releasing two new products in the Spring of 2017.
In addition to this product the Instant Pot Ultra is also being released that includes even more benefits like being able to cook in sous-vide mode or fine tune the cooking time, pressure, and temperature and even adjust for altitude. Fantastic additions if you ask me. To learn more see my review of the Instant Pot Ultra here.
Is the Instant Pot IP-DUO Plus Better or Worth it?
Yogurt making and multiple PSI settings are still the main upgrades from LUX to DUO but I think the improvement of the control panel is going to be a game changer for lots of people who just don’t understand the screen on older models.
The bigger screen for instance makes it much easier to read and the buttons make a little bit more sense for either choosing pre-programmed functions or for manually setting the PSI and cooking duration.
For me when I started using my Instant Pot it was the manual controls that took me a bit to understand. With this pot it looks like manual control will be a bit more intuitive.
My Instant Pot IP-DUO60 Plus Review
I will for sure be trying out the new IP-DUO Plus as soon as I can get my hands on one. My review so far has to do with sales copy from Instant Pot themselves and on face value the new model looks to be a winning upgrade. They will just have to get the price right to get people to upgrade.
As for older models I think this will drive down the price on older model DUO 60s and 80s so I think that in and of itself is going to be a win for consumers.
Take a look at the pre-release information on Amazon for yourself right here.
How much does the DUO Plus60 Cost? This is somewhat unclear since it still hasn’t officially hit the market yet but I do know it’s going to be just a little bit more than the regular DUO60. I know this because I saw an Amazon internal ad for it temporarily which listed the price. The price, which I cannot say was more than the DUO60 but less than the new Instant Pot Ultra which is listed for pre-sale right now over at Sur La Table.
Don’t worry, I’ll be soon publishing a companion article to this one comparing and reviewing the DUO Plus60 with the Instant Pot Ultra which I know is shipping on April 11, 2017. Update – you can see that review here.
I will of course add to this review of the DUO Plus electric pressure cooker when the model is sitting in my kitchen so look for that to come as soon as possible.
