It’s a great way to start your day, and it only requires 3 ingredients 🙂

Why This Recipe Works

One could argue that stovetop oatmeal tastes the same and is just as quick as the Instant Pot. And they’re not wrong... stovetop oatmeal is still fine and great. But this Instant Pot Oatmeal recipe is foolproof!

With the stovetop method, sometimes the water will evaporate more quickly and you risk burning the oatmeal and having a mess to clean up. Plus, you have to stand over the stove and stir every so often to prevent sticking.

I don’t know about you, but in the mornings, I like to keep things as simple and easy as possible. With a million other things that could go wrong, don’t let your breakfast be one of them! This Instant Pot Oatmeal recipe works perfectly every time. Just toss the ingredients into the pot, sit back and enjoy your coffee while it cooks.

Recipe Ingredients

Rolled oats – a.k.a. old-fashioned oats. It’s important to use rolled oats rather than instant or steel-cut oats, since they’re all processed differently and have varying cook times. If you have steel-cut oats, try out this Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats recipe!

Apple – any variety of apple works! Personally, I like to use apples on the sweeter side, like MacIntosh or honeycrisp. Honeycrisp tend to hold their shape well even after baking or cooking, while MacIntosh apples get a little soft and mushy so you can stir them right into your oatmeal. Both are great options, depending on what you like.

Cinnamon – the recipe says cinnamon to taste. I usually use about 1 teaspoon for 2 cups of oats because I love cinnamon flavor! You can also add a pinch of nutmeg or use an apple pie spice blend that goes wonderfully with the apple flavor.

Recipe Notes

  • This recipe is 100% vegan and gluten free! So it accommodates a wide range of dietary restrictions. If you’re not concerned with keeping it vegan, try using milk in place of half of the water for an extra creamy result. You could also use almond milk or coconut milk while still keeping the recipe vegan.
  • This oatmeal recipe is flexible. If you’re not a huge fan of apple cinnamon flavor, you can still make oatmeal in the Instant Pot the same way. Then top with fresh fruit, or eat it plain!

How to Serve Instant Pot Oatmeal

I love to serve this oatmeal with coconut milk or homemade almond milk on the side so you can add a splash if you want. It cools down the oatmeal a bit so you can eat it quicker and gives it a silky-smooth texture.

Also, if you like your breakfast on the sweeter side, try finishing your oatmeal with a splash of honey or pure maple syrup!

FAQs

What’s the difference between steel cut oats and rolled oats?

Both of these products come from the same oat grain. Steel cut oats are the full oats that have been roughly chopped. Rolled oats have been steamed and then flattened into tiny oval shapes, so they cook much faster than steel-cut oats.

  1. If I wanted to use peaches instead what would you recommend to do as peaches are so soft. Add them after the oats are cooked or add them while the oats are cooking?

    1. It depends on your personal preference. If you add them while cooking, they will become VERY soft, but they will also impart sweetness and flavor to the oats. You could also add them after cooking and then put the lid back on to let them basically steam and warm through for a few minutes. They will retain their shape that way.
