Instant Pot Onion Soup

Winter dinner calls for some cozy and comforting soup with bread or cheese crackers to boost up the energy:) And Instant Pot Onion Soup does this job so well!!

This recipe contains very simple steps and ingredients and gives you the result in the most delicious and appetizing way! You simply would not get over how much creamy and yummy a soup can be!

Recipe Ingredients

Butter - This adds a heart-warming creamy impression to your soup. Make sure your butter is at room temperature while using. You can also use Oil as its substitute but it doesn't give that much perfect taste as butter does!

Onion - I've used diced Yellow Onions in my recipe because they give a very nice caramel texture after being cooked and tastes so amazingly delicious. But you can also use Red Onions or White Onions in your recipe. This will not make a very big difference and will taste equally good :))

Beef - Use fresh and minced beef in your soup to get a rich meaty taste in your every bite!

Chipotle - It's smoked, dries jalapeno which gives a hot, smoky, and some kind of sweet flavor to your dish that you're going to love! If you don't have it available, You can use chipotle sauce or chipotle pepper but in small quantities.

Spices and Herbs - I am adding all spices, oregano leaves, and cumin seeds to my soup to make it a little bit spicy. You can add some more spices if you are a spice person!

Flour - It is used in thickening the soup stock. Try using lumps-free flour in your soup!

Beef Broth - This is on which your soup's taste actually depends! You're gonna love the flavor it's gonna add to your recipe so make sure you're using a very good quality beef broth to your soup. Taste it first before adding it.

Red Vinegar - The Red Wine Vinegar enhances the taste of the wonderful combination of flavors of ingredients You add to the soup also giving it a strong and tangy flavor! I prefer using 'Pompeian Red Wine Vinegar' because it is organic and considered the best brand for vinegar.

Cheddar Cheese - I prefer using Cheddar Cheese to my soup but you can also use the kind of cheese you love but it should be a good melting cheese. In the case of cheddar, both the yellow or white cheddar cheese would work well!

How to Make

Here is a step-by-step guide to making it easier for you to understand the recipe.

Gather all the necessary ingredients.

Take 5 Yellow Onions. Dice them and set them aside.

Now, Put ½ stick of Butter to an Instant Pot press Sautè at high- for 25 minutes.

Now, add diced onions to the Instant Pot.

Add ½ teaspoon of Salt to it.

Add a teaspoon of Black Pepper to it.


Add ½ lb of Shredded Beef to it.

Stir it frequently. Then add 6 cups of Beef Broth to it.

Add 1 teaspoon of All-Spices to it.

Add 1 teaspoon of Dried Oregano to it.

Add 2 teaspoons of Cumin Seeds to it.

Give the stock a proper mix with a help of a wooden spoon.

Then, add 2 tablespoons of Red Vinegar to it.

Add 1 cup of water to it.

Add 1 Chipotle to it.

Add 2 tablespoons of flour to it.

Add 3 cups of Cheddar Cheese to it.

Now give a quick stir and let the soup cook until it simmers.

Dish out the delicious Onion Soup and Serve it with Crackers and Cheese!

How to Serve

Do you want to serve Onion Soup with something more than just bread? Then serve it with Saltine Crackers and Cheese! This will give you or your guests a very decent, flavorful, and comforting appetizer vibe on winter days :))

Or you can have it with a Caesar Salad as a perfect side dish! It's actually a salad made with the combination of lettuce, parmesan cheese, chopped eggs, ground pepper mixed with some sour cream and mayonnaise, and just a pinch of salt! Doesn't it sound like a heavenly combo?!

Or simply serve it with Grilled Cheese Sandwiches and roasted vegetables aside.


Can I add Chicken instead of beef?

Yes, obviously you can! The best part of this recipe is that it's totally flexible! You can reshape it however you want! You can replace chicken with beef but then it would be good if you replace the beef broth with chicken broth too.

What else can I add?

You can add vegetables to this soup like peas or celery if you love some. Plus you can add and subtract spices too by your own choice.

Can I store and reheat the Onion Soup?

Yes, it can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days, and for 4-6 months in the freezer. Freeze it in an air-packed container. For reheating purposes, thaw your soup overnight in the fridge then heat it up in a pot until warm or microwave it for 2 minutes. It would be quite enough!

  • ½ stick butter
  • 5 onions diced
  • ½ lb beef shredded
  • 2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 chipotle
  • 1 teaspoon oregano dried
  • 2 tablespoon flour

  • 2 tablespoon red vinegar

  • Add butter to an instant pot. Press 'Saute' at high and set timings at 25 minutes.
  • Add onions, salt, black pepper, shredded beef to an instant pot and give a proper mix.
  • It would take a while for the onion to caramelize and beef to cook.
  • Now, add beef broth, all spices, oregano, cumin seeds to an instant pot and stir a bit.
  • Add red vinegar, water, chipotle, and flour to it.
  • Add cheddar cheese to it. Keep stirring until it simmers
  • Dish out the delicious onion soup. Garnish it with shredded cheddar cheese and serve!
