Egg and Cheese English Muffin Sandwich

A toasted muffin turns a few breakfast staples into a meal that is easy to hold and quick to enjoy. The egg adds protein, while melted cheese brings the flavor together without needing many extras. A splash of milk keeps the egg soft, and the crisp muffin gives each bite enough structure for eating at home or on the go.

Add bacon, sausage, spinach, tomato, or avocado when you want more variety. It works well for busy mornings, weekend brunch, or meal prep. Wrap it in foil for later, or serve it right away while the cheese is still melted and warm.

Why This Recipe Works

The toasted English muffin gives the sandwich a firm base, while the egg adds protein and keeps the meal filling. Cheese melts over the hot egg and adds flavor without requiring a long list of ingredients.

It is also easy to adjust for different tastes. You can add bacon, sausage, vegetables, avocado, or sauce, or keep it simple with egg and cheese. The sandwich cooks quickly, travels well, and works for breakfast, brunch, or meal prep.

Ingredients

English Muffin: The English muffin gives the sandwich a firm base with crisp edges after toasting.
Substitute: Use a bagel, biscuit, croissant, or two slices of bread.

Egg: The egg makes the sandwich filling and adds protein. Cook it fried, scrambled, or folded.
Substitute: Use egg whites or a plant-based egg substitute.

Cheddar Cheese: Cheddar melts well and adds a familiar cheese flavor.
Substitute: Use American cheese, Swiss, Monterey Jack, provolone, or pepper Jack.

Butter: Butter helps cook the egg and adds flavor to the toasted muffin.
Substitute: Use olive oil, cooking spray, or plant-based butter.

Milk: Milk makes the egg softer when whisked before cooking.
Substitute: Use half-and-half, dairy-free milk, or leave it out.

Tips

  • Toast the English muffin first so it stays firm after adding the egg and cheese.
  • Cook the egg in a small pan or egg ring so it fits neatly on the muffin.
  • Place the cheese on the hot egg so it starts melting before the sandwich is assembled.
  • Keep the heat at medium-low so the egg cooks evenly without turning brown.
  • Wrap the finished sandwich in foil for a few minutes if you want the cheese to melt more.

How to Serve

Serve the sandwich warm for breakfast, brunch, or a quick meal. It is filling on its own but also pairs well with fruit, potatoes, or a simple drink.

  • Serve with fresh fruit such as berries, orange slices, grapes, or apple wedges.
  • Pair with breakfast potatoes or hash browns for a larger morning meal.
  • Add sliced avocado, tomato, or spinach for more texture and flavor.
