Candied Sweet Potatoes

Thanksgiving at my aunt’s house always meant a bubbling dish of sweet potatoes with caramelized edges and a buttery cinnamon glaze. I started making my own version years later, keeping the same comfort but using a simple stovetop syrup that coats every slice.

These candied sweet potatoes come out tender, glossy, and warmly spiced, with just enough sweetness to feel special without turning the side dish into dessert for everyone.

Why This Recipe Works

This recipe works because the sweet potatoes cook directly in the spiced butter mixture, so they absorb flavor instead of being coated only at the end. Brown sugar melts into the butter and creates a rich syrup, while cinnamon and nutmeg add warmth without overpowering the natural sweetness of the potatoes. A small splash of orange juice keeps the glaze from tasting too heavy and adds a subtle brightness.

I also like that the method is simple enough for a holiday table but practical for Sunday dinner. There is no need to boil the potatoes first, and everything comes together in one skillet before finishing in the oven. The slices become tender without falling apart, while the glaze thickens around the edges and turns glossy. It is a dependable side dish for anyone who wants classic candied sweet potatoes with a homemade flavor and a texture that stays soft rather than mushy.

Ingredients

Sweet potatoes: Orange-fleshed sweet potatoes are ideal because they become soft and naturally sweet as they cook. Garnet or jewel varieties both work well, while yams labeled at many U.S. grocery stores are often sweet potatoes and can usually be used here.

Brown sugar: Brown sugar creates the deep, caramel-like sweetness that gives the glaze its classic flavor. Light brown sugar keeps it mellow, while dark brown sugar makes the sauce richer.

Butter: Butter adds richness and helps the glaze coat every slice. Unsalted butter gives you better control over seasoning, but salted butter can work if you reduce the added salt.

Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon brings familiar holiday warmth and balances the sweetness. Pumpkin pie spice can substitute, though it will add extra spice notes.

Orange juice: Orange juice loosens the glaze and adds a gentle citrus note that keeps the dish from tasting overly sweet. Apple juice can be used for a softer fruit flavor.

Tips

  • Cut the sweet potatoes into even slices so they soften at the same rate.
  • Use a wide skillet or baking dish so the potatoes have room to sit in the glaze.
  • Stir the syrup until the brown sugar dissolves before adding the potatoes.
  • Spoon glaze over the potatoes once or twice during baking for more even flavor.
  • Let the dish rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving so the glaze can thicken slightly.

How to Serve

Candied sweet potatoes are best served warm, when the glaze is still glossy and the centers are soft. They are especially at home on holiday tables, but there is no reason to save them only for special occasions. Their sweet, buttery flavor pairs well with salty, savory mains and simple green vegetables.

  • Serve them alongside roast turkey, stuffing, and green beans for a classic Thanksgiving plate.
  • Pair them with baked ham and sautéed greens for a comforting Sunday dinner.
  • Spoon them next to roasted chicken or pork chops, then add a crisp salad to balance the sweetness of the meal.

  1. This tasted just like the candied sweet potatoes I grew up eating. I added marshmallows at the end and loved it.
