12 Foods You Should Never Throw Away Just Because Of The Date

Dates on packaging can be confusing, and many people toss perfectly good food without a second thought. Items like pasta and even chocolate often last much longer than expected when stored right. Knowing whatโ€™s still okay to eat can help you waste less and save money while keeping your kitchen stocked with reliable basics.

Bread

Bread can last past the printed date, especially if it has been stored in a cool place or in the fridge. The biggest thing to watch for is mold. If no fuzzy spots appear and the smell is normal, it is usually safe to toast or use for sandwiches. Even bread that becomes slightly dry can still work well for toast, croutons, or breadcrumbs.

Yogurt

A container of yogurt doesnโ€™t suddenly turn bad the second the printed date passes. In many cases, yogurt stays good for about 1 to 2 weeks after the date if it has been kept cold in the refrigerator. The natural acidity helps slow harmful bacteria. If the yogurt smells normal and the texture looks smooth without mold on the surface, it is usually safe to eat.

Potato Chips

That forgotten bag in the pantry might still be fine even after the printed date passes. Because they are dry and packed in sealed bags, potato chips often stay edible past the expiry date. What usually changes is texture and flavor. They might become slightly stale instead of crispy. If the smell is normal and there are no strange oily or rancid notes, they are generally safe to eat.

Honey

Few foods last as long as this natural sweetener. In fact, honey is widely known as the only food that basically does not have a real expiry date. Archaeologists have even found jars of honey in ancient tombs that were still safe to eat. Because of its extremely low moisture and natural antibacterial properties, honey resists spoilage. It may crystallize over time, but gentle warming returns it to liquid form.

Hard Cheese

Firm cheeses like cheddar or parmesan often last well beyond the expiry date. If a small spot of mold appears, many people simply cut off the moldy section and keep the rest. The dense texture makes it harder for mold to spread deep into the cheese. As long as the smell and taste remain normal, hard cheese can stay usable for quite a while.

Canned Tomatoes

Pantry staples often last far longer than people expect, especially sealed cans. A can of canned tomatoes can stay usable for many months or even years after the printed date if the can remains undamaged. The acidity helps preserve the contents. Always check the can first. If it is swollen, leaking, or badly dented, throw it away. If the can looks normal, the tomatoes are usually safe.

Peanut Butter

Sticky spreads have a surprisingly long shelf life thanks to their fat content and low moisture. A jar of peanut butter can remain good well past its expiry date when stored properly in a cool pantry. Natural oils may separate over time, which is normal and easily fixed with a quick stir. If it smells nutty and fresh without any sour or chemical odor, it is usually still perfectly edible.

Butter has a surprisingly long shelf life in the fridge. It often stays good for several weeks after the date on the package. Because it contains a high amount of fat and little water, bacteria do not grow easily in it. If butter smells fresh and does not taste sour or rancid, it is usually still perfectly fine for cooking or spreading.

Cereal

Dry breakfast cereal can stay edible long after its printed date. Since it contains very little moisture, it does not spoil quickly. Over time the cereal might lose some crispness or flavor, but it usually remains safe to eat if it has been stored in a sealed container. If it still smells normal and there are no signs of pests, it is generally fine.

Chocolate

Chocolate bars rarely spoil quickly. In fact, they can last months or even longer past their expiry date. Sometimes you may notice a white coating on the surface called chocolate bloom. It happens when fat or sugar rises to the surface, but it does not mean the chocolate is unsafe. The taste and texture may change slightly, but it is still edible.

Pasta

Dry pasta is one of the longest lasting foods in the kitchen. Because it contains almost no moisture, it can stay safe for a very long time beyond the printed date if stored in a dry pantry. The flavor and texture usually stay the same. As long as there is no strange smell, discoloration, or insects in the package, dry pasta is usually fine to cook.

Pickles

Pickles stored in vinegar brine can remain good for months after the expiry date if kept refrigerated after opening. The vinegar acts as a natural preservative, helping slow spoilage. As long as the liquid remains clear and the smell stays normal, they are usually safe to eat. The texture may soften slightly over time, but the flavor often remains strong.
