10 Overrated Foods Everyone Pretends to Love

Foie Gras

Ever take a bite of something super hyped and think... this is it? Some foods get all the love, but deep down, not everyone’s on board. From mushy trends to edible gold there are a few dishes we all pretend to like. Time to call them out - no judgment, just honesty.

Lobster

Many people avoid eating this delicacy because of the sky-high price of lobster and the unnerving nature of how it's cooked — usually boiled alive. "You are literally cracking open the scalded carcass of a giant sea insect and sucking its guts out in tiny morsels," laments one diner.

Acai Bowls

These smoothie bowls look healthy and Instagram-worthy, but they’re often loaded with hidden sugars and overpriced toppings. Despite the hype, they’re just frozen fruit purees dressed up to seem exotic. Sure, they’re refreshing, but they’re more about the presentation than providing a truly satisfying or filling meal.

Matcha Latte

This green tea trend promises antioxidants and energy, but most matcha lattes are loaded with milk and sugar, masking the tea’s actual flavor. While it looks trendy and healthy, the bitter undertone isn’t for everyone, and the price tag for a small cup leaves many wondering what all the fuss is about.

Truffle Oil

This trendy ingredient is everywhere, but it’s rarely made with real truffles. Instead, it’s an artificial, overpowering flavor that can ruin even the simplest dish. Fries, pasta, or pizza with truffle oil sound fancy, but they rarely deliver on the promise of true luxury. It’s more gimmick than gourmet.

Oversized Burgers

Bigger is better regarding food portions, but when burgers are oversized, it approaches disaster territory for many diners. There comes a point when a cheeseburger becomes prohibitively large, and you can't even fit it in your mouth when taking a bite.

It quickly becomes a "burger salad," and you eat everything with a fork. Eating a burger should be a glorious experience, not a sad, salad-like moment.

Avocado Toast

Avocado Toast is a brunch specialty that caters to the Instagram generation — a group of millennials that would like a delicious-looking dish instead of a delicious-tasting one. It's overpriced for what you get, and the plate is nothing more than bread and avocado. It's a hard pass for many people.

Foie Gras

A delicacy that has been recently banned in U.S. states in the past, foie gras is produced by force-feeding ducks and geese until they become immensely overweight, then slaughtering them.

Their livers and other organs are then shipped to fine-dining restaurants worldwide. To say it's overrated is an understatement. "Foie gras tastes amazing," confesses one man. "But you can also taste the guilt in every bite."

Edible Gold

Not only is edible gold pretentious, chefs who include it as an ingredient on a menu are the worst of the worst! "The whole point of gold in jewelry is that it is non-reactive and is therefore slow to tarnish," explains one man.

"So when it's in food, it doesn't react with saliva and therefore adds zero to the taste. Its malleability allows for ultra-thin flakes that are not excessively expensive but make the bling lovers go, 'Ooooooh, GOLD!'"

Macarons

These colorful French cookies look elegant and fancy, but they’re mostly sugar and air. While they make great Instagram props, their high price and minimal flavor payoff often leave people disappointed. Pretty? Yes. Delicious? Debatable. Once you’ve had one, it’s hard to justify the hype—or the cost.

Chipotle Burritos

Fans of this fast-casual Mexican chain restaurant should look away! "Don't get me wrong, the actual food is pretty good," admits one diner.

"But their burritos are like Tommy Boy trying to put on that little jacket. It always falls apart and ends up in a bowl or everywhere else. Or they don't mix it, and you're getting bites full of just rice, just guac, etc. Just get the bowl and mix it."

Tomahawk-Cut Steaks

Diners will only find tomahawk-cut steaks in upscale steakhouses. It's usually one of the most expensive cuts on the menu, often priced per pound. However, when you account for the fact that it includes a humongous, obviously-unedible bone that exists to jack up the price, it quickly becomes apparent that this steak is entirely overrated. What's wrong with an excellent filet mignon?

Wedge Salad

This steakhouse staple consists of an entire chunk of iceberg lettuce, a few token tomatoes, and some blue cheese crumbles — if you're lucky. It's an overrated dish because of the sheer work involved with cutting your own personal gigantic slab of lettuce! Restaurants are meant to be enjoyable, not filled with hard work.

Cronuts

Cronuts, a cross between a croissant and a donut, took the world by storm with their flaky layers and sweet glaze. While they’re visually appealing and offer a unique texture, many argue that the hype exceeds the flavor. Waiting in long lines for these pastries might leave you feeling underwhelmed.
