10 Overpriced Fast Food Chains That Just Aren’t Worth It

Stop spending your hard-earned money on fast food that doesn’t live up to the price tag. These 12 restaurants charge too much for meals that often disappoint. From bland flavors to small portions, they fail to justify the cost. Skip these overpriced spots and save your cash for better dining options.

Jamba Juice

As one commenter said, "A smoothie should not cost upwards of $10." Apparently, the initial concept of Jamba Juice when it first opened in 1990 was that "eating better should be easy." However, it makes it challenging for your wallet when it's that expensive.

Chipotle

The internet forum seems a little divided on this one, and it seems to depend on just how generous your local Chipotle store is. "Portions are shrinking so fast at the Chipotle near me, but if you can find one that still has generous portions, it is amazing," says one poster. Another says, "Hey man, Chipotle is still a fine deal. You can get a fat burrito for ten bucks if you know how to order it."

Dairy Queen

Known for its iconic Blizzards, Dairy Queen has been around since 1940, promising affordable, tasty treats. But in recent years, some customers feel prices have gone up without improvements in portion size or quality. One disappointed fan said, "Blizzards are great, but paying nearly $7 for one small dessert is just too much."

Burger King

When Burger King opened in 1954, you could grab a burger and shake for 18 cents. Today, a medium combo with a Whopper, fries, and a drink will set you back almost $10. One forum member believes it's worse than just the prices, saying, "It used to be one of my top choices, but now it's terrible — the food, the service, and store cleanliness."

Dunkin'

Originally a budget-friendly spot for coffee and donuts, Dunkin' Donuts now has people talking about higher prices and smaller portions. A bagel with cream cheese and a coffee can easily top $8, leaving customers questioning the value. One commenter said, "I love Dunkin', but they’re making it hard to justify a daily coffee run."

Panera

In 1987, a San Franciscan sourdough starter helped raise a small bakery, the St. Louis Bread Company. It eventually became Panera and has changed hands several times since. Some people believe it doesn't live up to the hype anymore. One person says, "Early to mid-2000s was the golden Panera years. It's 100% garbage nowadays, which is such a shame."

Subway

When a 17-year-old Fred DeLuca decided to go into business with a family friend Dr. Peter Buck in 1965 to form a sub sandwich shop that "served freshly-made, customizable and affordable sandwiches," they couldn't have imagined how incredibly popular it would become. Nowadays, it's not that affordable. The last time I bought a footlong, it was $11 for bread with cheese, avocado, and salad.

Five Guys

This burger joint first appeared in the late 80s in Vermont and began franchising in the early 2000s. They pride themselves on using fresh, not frozen, ingredients, but does that justify the price tag? "The last time I was at 5 Guys, it was filthy, and this one teenager clearly didn't want to work. All I thought was, 'Great. I just paid $16 for a burger and fries, and they're reluctant to make it.'"

KFC

Thousands of KFC restaurants worldwide bear the likeness of its founder, Colonel Sanders, on red and white signs. It undoubtedly has a fan following for its crispy fried chicken with 11 herbs and spices.

One poster says, "Since the Colonel died, it has gone steadily downhill. He had his way of doing things and maintained standards. I heard that he would randomly drop in on KFCs when he was alive, and if he didn't like what he saw or ate, he would pull their franchise." Sanders died in 1980.

Popeyes

Famous for its fried chicken, Popeyes used to be a go-to for cheap, tasty meals. Now, with a combo meal nearing $12 in some locations, it’s become a bit of a splurge. As one fan put it, "The food is good, but the prices and long wait times have me going less often."

Jimmy Johns

When Jimmy decided on the sandwich business instead of joining the military in 1983, he probably didn't foresee almost 3k locations and $2 billion in sales is the norm.

While it may have been an excellent sandwich joint in the past, one individual says, "Their quality dropped dramatically this past year." The poster also went on to say that the company had also dropped wages expecting employees of the fast-food place to rely on tips.

Jack in the Box

While one person suggested that Jack in the Box was cheaper than other fast-food eateries, another says, "Jack in the Box went from $5 combos to $12 combos in three years." That's an increase of 140% — is it really worth it?

  1. I think I'll keep Subway on MY list. No matter WHAT I try, I can't get my subs to taste as good as Subway's BMT does. Yep, I'll pay to have someone make my food taste yummy. LOL!

  2. Culvers should be on this list, some time ago my wife was out of town so I figured I would go to culvers for dinner ordered a double cheese buirger meal, got home started eating looked at my burger and it was a single burger but looking at it again it was a double the meat was so thin I was like wow. Sometime later the wife and I went back for more punishment ordered 2 burger meals, 1 order of cheese curds and 2 shakes then drove to the window the girl said 42 dollars and some change I said impossible she looked the bill over and said yea that's right, I drove off and haven't been back there since oh and mind you almost 19 dollars for a 3 piece cod dinner with fries oh and a small bun.

  3. I used to be a fan of fast food. Now most of the big chain burger places have cardboard tasting burgers. The fast food industry has went down since Corona every fast food place thinks that they should charge the same thing as a sit down restaurant with a wait staff. They don't have to pay the overhead of having people in their restaurant and washing dishes and having a wait staff, but they charge as much if not more. They have lost their mind.

  4. I do have to admit, at least locally, Dairy Queen does have a good value meal. Small drink, Fries, Cheese burger, and sundae for $7 plus tax. It beats what the other big chains offer

  5. For Burger King - TWICE I had eaten there and within 1 hour been very intestinally sick - now that's NOT a virus! KFC - no more, never again as their products have been sitting in the "heater" ovens for way too long and are so very dried out. Certainly NOT worth the money and it's too bad they haven't kept the Colonel's standards.
