Jello
One user quickly pointed out that gelatins should be relegated to the nearest trash can outside of Jello. "When I think about elaborate gelatins, the only people I see doing that are my grandparents when they do a formal meal. I don't think anybody in my generation would keep that tradition alive."
Kale
When it comes to leafy greens, to each his own, one respondent has an issue with one lush green in particular. "Hear me out - kale. In the 90s, it was only used to decorate salad bars; then, everyone started eating it because it was healthier than iceberg lettuce. But to make it edible in a salad, you have to trim off the stems and then massage it. Just tear up some romaine and be done with it. Also, no one has time for kale chips — that is just a last-ditch effort to make kale appealing."
Liver
Another person is positive that liver is one food that people don't flock to. "I feel like liver was probably more popular a few generations ago and will only continue to decline in popularity. I've never eaten it."
Wraps
Another participant feels food has mostly stayed the same in the last two decades. "However, I remember wraps being everywhere as the "healthy" option in the early 2000s. That's about it."
Pinterest Foods
Someone pulls their opinion based on items they no longer see on their Pinterest boards. "Based on what I no longer see on Pinterest...Cauliflower crust things, zucchini noodles, and anything made in an Instant Pot. Those were all huge several years ago."
Almond Milk
Another individual thinks water might be the source of the next food to go the way of the Dodo. "Almond milk — it's far too water-intensive to grow almonds, and as the cost goes up, people will find alternatives."
Cake Roll
A second respondent is positive that snack cakes like Swiss rolls and oatmeal cream pies are toast. "Snack cakes (like Little Debbie's). Most people who eat them are elderly residents or little kids because they're easy to put in a school lunch. An increasing number of people outside those age groups seem to find them unappealing."
Shake and Bake
Remember the old Shake and Bake commercial where the little boy says, "It's Shake-n-Bake, and I helped!"? Well, somebody is relatively sure that no one eats store-bought breading anymore. "Are people still doing Shake and Bake? Hamburger Helper? Sloppy Joe's? I used to love this stuff but haven't had it in decades."
Kool-Aid
If you're over thirty, you'll likely remember the Kool-aid man and the refreshingly cool taste of tropical punch on a hot summer day. Yeah, at least one forum user thinks the Kool-aid man isn't so cool anymore. "Powdered, sugary drinks like Kool-aid."
Fruit Cake
Have you ever seen a Christmas doorstopper before? It's usually disguised as a loaf of fruit cake. One holiday Scrooge isn't a fan. "Fruit cake, who eats that stuff?"
Frozen Juice Concentrate
Before juice came in a jug, it was housed in cans of frozen concentrate. Someone noticed that no one seems to buy this form of juice anymore. "Frozen juice concentrate. I remember making orange juice from a can of concentrate. I always had a stockpile of cans in my freezer. The bottled orange juice always tasted terrible. Then about 25 years ago, bottled juice started improving, and frozen concentrate became less popular. You can still get the frozen stuff, but I rarely see people using it anymore."
Gourmet Desserts
If it isn't gourmet, it isn't right. At least, that's what some people must have thought once upon a time. One reader is certain gourmet foods are on a slippery slope of doom. "The dessert cycle went gelato/gourmet ice cream, cupcakes, and cookies. The gourmet cookie trend will not last long, but I wouldn't be surprised if the next dessert were throwback-y. Not Jell-O because it's not very portable, not super satisfying, and often not vegetarian, or anything that you can't make in individual portions and don't have to keep super cold. Maybe a variation on pie (I feel like pie's gotten passed over in the gourmet dessert fads) — possibly hand pies?"
