Why should I use the Instant Pot?

Cooking them over a stove takes time. This traditional method takes up to 25 minutes. With the Instant pot, you can cut the time in half and cook these in just 10 minutes.

The results will be completely the same, but without losing your time and worrying will something burn.

If you want to try out a dish with the caramelized onions, I suggest you go with French Onion Soup.

How to use caramelized onions?

You can pile a spoonful of caramelized onions on baguette slices for a delicious snack.

I also like adding caramelized onions to the Instant Pot French Dip sandwiches.

What onions to use?

For this Instant Pot caramelized onions recipe it really does not matter. Silver, purple, or plan. Any onion is okay. Make sure they are not bruised or rotten and the rest is fine.

Can I use sugar?

I didn't add sugar to the Instant Pot caramelized onions, but Some people like to add sugar while cooking.

The sugar gives a deeper flavor and you can add some if you really like to. Feel free to add plain white or brown sugar, just make sure you don't use more than 1 ½ tsp.

Can I use oil instead of butter?

You can, but the butter makes the difference. The butter gives that nice creaminess the plain oil cannot offer.

  1. 4 stars
I made exactly as directed... the onions turned out super flavorful and tasted great, but they were more of a spread or paste than I was expecting. Still, can't beat this for EASY!

  2. Wondering did you try or did any comments mention trying to make French onion soup when caramelized onions were done Thanks ?

    1. Yes, these are perfect for making French onion soup! It's a make ahead trick to make cooking the soup faster, if you caramelize the onions ahead of time.

  3. I made them yesterday and they came out excellent. I changed Pressure Cook time to 6 minutes and it worked well. However, I want to ask that if I double the quantity of onions, should I need to double the timings?

    1. 6 minutes are fine but don't exceed that, otherwise they will be mushy and you won't enjoy them. Cooking time will be same or van be exceeded by 2 minutes if you double the recipe.

  4. I saved the juice for future use and this idea turned out brilliant. I make the beans soup from this juice which came out so delicious and mouthwatering. Thanks for the wonderful recipe!

    1. Oh wow! I adore it when people like and follow my suggestions. You have nailed it by using it in the split pea soup.

  5. These were great! I made them to go along with an Asian recipe of different lentils and grains, known as Haleem! I'm utilizing my time in this quarantine by storing premade foods and this is a great addition. Thanks for the shortcut!

    1. I agree that this is the best recipe in quarantine and it goes best with lentils, grains, and rice! You can try it with beans or chickpeas too! I will also try haleem.
